Good morning, Casper. Here's your local news at a glance for Monday, the 15th of September.
CRIME NEWS
- ➤ Prominent hunting influencer Ryan Lampers faces felony charges for wildlife crimes after he allegedly illegally took a trophy mule deer buck in Idaho in December 2024—Wyoming hunters say the case has raised concerns about unethical social media practices. Cowboy State Daily
ECONOMY NEWS
- ➤ A long legal fight may soon end if the California Supreme Court rules before Oct. 1 on the Oakland Bulk and Oversized Terminal project that could let Wyoming coal be exported overseas. Officials and industry groups are watching closely (the Wyoming Mining Association hopes the move will open new markets). Cowboy State Daily
ENVIRONMENT NEWS
- ➤ A University of Wyoming study found that when cheatgrass covers over 20% of an area, mule deer avoid it, and scientists project up to 50% of good mule deer habitat in northeast Wyoming could be lost in the next 20 years. Researchers say strategic herbicide treatments (such as Rejuvra) can help restore native plants and bring mule deer back to these areas. Casper Star-Tribune
- ➤ At a recent meeting in Lander, the Wyoming Game and Fish Commission reversed its plan to trim protections for parts of the pronghorn migration corridor after nearly all of the 530 public comments supported keeping it intact. The proposal will go to Gov. Mark Gordon for review and the formation of a working group—this full designation covers all 10 segments used by the Sublette Pronghorn Herd to guard against risks from development and housing sprawl.
